The Really Old Bali Blog (2013-2015) « Strictly off the menu: Magic Mushrooms illegal in Bali (2021 Update)

2021 Update: Yes, magic mushrooms are still very much illegal in Bali – and taking them will earn you between four and 12 years in prison.

Hallucinogenic psilocybin Magic Mushrooms, or shrooms

Hallucinogenic psilocybin magic mushrooms, or 'shrooms'.

If your idea of fun in Kuta was choking through a mouthful of magic mushrooms, washing them down with half-a-dozen Bintangs and tearing around town on your rented scooter, think again.

Despite Indonesia having some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world, magic mushrooms had always strangely avoided the ban.

Until now.

Bali Police have sent out a strong warning that they won't tolerate them anymore. (Magic mushrooms used to be openly promoted in scores of food stalls and restaurants around the Kuta area, and served up in juices and omelettes.)

Hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms have now been included as a Type 1 narcotic in the Republic, along with heroin and marijuana – and consuming magic mushrooms from January 2015 will earn you between four and 12 years in prison. Selling will get you between five and 20 years.

Which is a great thing.

No more tourists jumping to their deaths off balconies, or schoolies breaking their girlfriend's jaw.
